Introducing OpenCoffee

It seems that a great many entrepreneurs are toiling away at home or in offices by themselves. I’ve been working mostly from home for nearly 7 years, and I love the freedom it offers. I can pick my kids up from school, take them to baseball practice, and even take some time to see a movie or grab lunch with a friend.

What’s missing is the daily interaction with other people. In an office setting, surrounded by other people, dozens of short conversations happen daily in a way that’s not possible via IM and the phone.

The earliest moments of SacStarts were Scott and I having coffee together. Sitting down and being able to chat about betas, financing, servers, and other issues facing our startups. We wanted other people involved, and ended up with the dinners that evolved into SacStarts.

We’re now returning to our roots. The the article I linked to in Building a Startup Scene had a link to Saul Klein’s blog in which he describes an idea called the OpenCoffee Club, a place and time where entrepreneurs and investors can get together in an informal setting.

Saul says,

The key is a regular place and a regular time - it’s not important who comes along, some days it might be no one - just that people know if they want to meet, this is the time and this is the place.

We want to create some density for people — a few places where people know they can meet or bump into others.

SacStarts is going to get this rolling locally. OpenCoffee won’t be a gabfest like the monthly dinners are. It’s just an informal place and time to drop in. Bring your laptop and get some work done, knowing there will be other people around you doing the same.

Stop by anytime between 8am and 11am every Tuesday at Tupelo Coffee Roasting, 5700 Elvas Ave near 56th and H Streets in East Sac. It’s 5 minutes from US50 at the 65th Street exit and a stone’s throw away from Sac State. They’ve got good coffee, free wifi, an open comfortable atmosphere, and plenty of free parking on the street.

It’s my hope that you’ll meet and bond with others and build the sorts of relationships that strong networks are made of.
